In others, it is the answer to many of their workforce and fiscal needs. The reality is that many times an offshore workforce is a tool that can be used to produce meaningful operational and financial benefits that positively impact a provider’s bottom line. What was once seen as a lower quality and higher risk option, is now a solution that helps solve problems from operating costs and staffing constraints to scalability. ### What is Offshoring? When it comes to healthcare, offshoring is using an international workforce to complete certain RCM functions such as billing, insurance resolution, and even live 24/7 customer service. Using offshore resources often allows for expanded operational capacity that can scale rapidly to address needs. In the past, the lower cost of using offshore workers was minimized by what many considered a lower quality in the work completed. There were also regulatory and compliance concerns with using offshore workers. Not being sure if they would follow HIPAA and other regulatory requirements made providers think twice about sending information to an overseas vendor, not knowing if the benefits would outweigh the risks. ### The Cost of Staying Onshore As the cost of living continues to rise, healthcare RCM is not being spared. From changes in Medicaid and Medicare, and legislative initiatives like the Big Beautiful Bill, to higher insurance and out-of-pocket expenses for patients that lead to more medical debt, healthcare providers are watching their revenue decline. There are several things that have an impact on providers’ bottom lines. - Higher Operating Costs – At a base level onshore talent costs more than offshore. Often you can find vendors that offer offshore options at a significant cost difference. - Staffing Constraints – Many hospitals and health systems are finding that the talent they need is not always available when they need it. - Slower Scalability – Growth can also be an issue when it needs to happen quickly. Finding qualified people to fill the roles needed can impact your plan to expand. With the improved abilities of offshore workers, many of these problems can be met head on. Staffing constraints and scalability are eased when the right people for the position can be added and removed quickly based on the hospital’s needs. Additionally, offshore workers are moving into more patient-facing roles. Being able to offer 24/7 live support can be a major plus. ### The Keys to Offshore Success While utilizing offshore resources can be a positive, it’s not the answer to everything. There are states such as Arizona, Alaska, Ohio and Wisconsin where Medicare and Medicaid data is banned from being stored or processed overseas, but for other aspects of healthcare RCM, offshoring may be the answer. The first step is making sure it is the right fit for your needs.
